Haiti charity song tops the chart

'Everybody Hurts' was originally a hit for REM, but over the last couple of weeks a whole host of stars have come together to re-recorded it to help raise money for the Haiti earthquake appeal.

Gordon Brown might be the most powerful man in the country but when it comes to music even he turns to Simon Cowell.  It was the PM who first asked the X Factor judge if he could gather some celebs to put together a charity single following the devastating earthquake in the Caribbean.

The song chosen was originally a top ten hit for REM in 1993, the new version of 'Everybody Hurts' features 21 of the biggest artists around including Leona Lewis, Mariah Carey, Cheryl Cole, JLS, Miley Cyrus, James Blunt, Gary Barlow and mark Owen.

The charity track stormed in to our chart as this week's highest new entry, ending chart newbie, Owl City's two week reign at the top of the chart.

We also saw a high new entry for Ke$ha in our top ten, it's the follow-up to her Big Top 40 No. 1, 'TiK ToK'.  'Blah Blah Blah' features 3OH!3 and is the second single to be taken from her new album, 'Animal' which was released on Monday.  'Blah Blah Blah' was new this week at No. 8.

Our highest climber this week came from Timbaland, the superstar producer has teamed up with Katy Perry on his new single 'If We Ever Meet Again', which climbed 21 places this week to No. 3.

  3. "Charity should start at home. Look after our own before we look after others. Would others come running to help us if something went wrong on the UK. I don't think so. Simon, put your fat hand in your pocket and give to Haiti yourself"
