Rage Against the Machine crashes top 10

As clocks struck midnight on Monday morning the countdown to the Christmas No. 1 2009 began as Rage Against the Machine fans were wasting no time.

Within an hour the 1992 track, 'Killing In the Name' crashed straight in to the iTunes top ten and straight to the top spot before X Factor winner Joe McElderry managed to make a dent in the chart.

The track has appeared in the realtime download chart as a result of a Facebook campaign which is aiming to thwart Simon Cowell's attempt to hijack the Christmas No. 1 for another year.

So far the Facebook group has the support of over 700,000 members who will all be clicking to download 'Killing In the Name' over the next week.  The group hasn't just managed to crash the chart, they've also managed to crash Facebook.

On Monday the Facebook page was receiving more visits than the site could handle and Facebook was forced to temporarily close the group down.

Joe's single was made available on iTunes around midnight and made its way in to the live top ten at around 4am.  At 10:15 it finally pushed Rage Against the Machine out of the way to claim the realtime No. 1 spot.

Now the question is, can Joe keep Rage Against the Machine out of the way and make it to Christmas No. 1?

Find out who claims the title of Christmas No. 1 2009, well be counting down the Big Top 40 on Sunday from 4pm.

  3. "It's about time that the masses united and took it to the man, For me, this is a proud day in music history. Sure, it's nothing massive but it's something and that's the point of it. The fact that we all joint together and actually managed to overcome this corporate capitalist giant known as the X-Factor and actually accomplished something is quite brilliant in my books. Long live RATM."

  5. "Hmm, good thing that Rage won, it just shows that when people put their minds to things, we can get results, and some good music in the charts. The campaign wasn't an attack on Joe himself, more on the monopolisation of the Christmas number one, which has now been broken thanks to only two people starting a campaign. Free thinking, it always wins"

  8. "ok x factor winners arent the only ppl who covers, lots of others do too so i dont think its fair sayin that. and its not joe's fault that the xmas no.1 spots taken by the x factor winner every year now is it? so doing his to joe isnt fair, and if the only reason ratm are winning is because they dont want x factor to take the spot again this year doesnt prove that ratm is better bt used. 9. "Calm down guys! No one forces any of you to listen to the charts, you can listen to whatever music you like! I don't really like the RATM song, but I'm a big fan of real rock, everything from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin! Merry Christmas to you all!"

  10. "'some of those who run forces are the same that burn crosses' 'Those who die you justify, put them in the bag with your trophy wife' 'F*** You I won't do what you tell me' Lets think about what that means rather than winging about some poxy distraction from what is actually going on in the world. you want to put your energy into something look at the alternative media, the truth gets you MAD!
